The island of Korcula

By its natural beauty and well-indented coast, the island of Korcula belongs to the most attractive Mediterranean islands. It is 46,8 km long and its surface is about 276 km2.The coastline is 182 km long and ennobled by 195 well-preserved coves and capes and 48 small islands and islets. Korcula is covered with hundreds of different sorts of aromatic Mediterranean plants and lush pinewoods after which the island was named Korkyra Nigra, centuries ago. With the lushest vegetation of all islands  in the Adriatic and the exceptional purity and clarity of the surrounding seawater washing its shores, Korcula is the island of superior advantages as a place for holidaymakers, travelers, and sailors.
Vela Luka is the second largest town on the Adriatic islands (population 4.500) offering a rich variety of cultural and entertainment events, full of restaurants, cafés, shops ... Quite a number of archeological studies and papers were published about the prehistoric times of Vela Luka, especially those about its cave called Vela spilja (Grand Cave), known for the discovery of skeletons dating back to the Neolithic Stone Age. The parochial church of St. Joseph was built in the 19th century. Vela Luka is known for its original Dalmatian folk music, dances, and songs performed by many bands of singers, a.k.a. minstrels (local: klapa)..
Vela Luka
The town of Vela Luka is situated at the deep end of the broad bay of the same name decorated with a large number of gentle and cozy coves with small beaches and two small islets, Osjak and Proizd. For the most part, there are from just 2 or 3 up to 20 apartment, boarding, and holiday houses, whereas the larger coves turned into small housing estates and residential areas (Triporta with 30, Nova with 30, Gradina with over 100 houses).

None of these coves is more than 10 km away from Vela Luka. Apartments and rooms in Vela Luka are mostly 20 - 200 m away from the shore, and only a few of them are further back offshore, from 200 to 500 m. The town's public beach is set up in front of the Posejdon Hotel, only 150 m away from the town's center by boat (cruising all day long to and from)   or 2 km by road.
Several times a day, little ships take visitors

from downtown Vela Luka to the well-known destinations for day trips, the small islands of Osjak and Proizd , with crystal clear seawater and gorgeous beaches. By car, the numerous coves with small beaches are accessible in less than 10-15 minutes.

The City of Korcula is the tourist, economic and cultural center of the island of the same name. It is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the Mediterranean. The city is situated at the traffic intersection of the island, and it has been attracting travelers and colonists of all times. The antic writers refer to the city as the stone city by the name of Korkyra Melaina, founded by the Greek colonists. Following the Greeks, Illyrians, and Romans, in the 9th century, Croats colonized the island and the city of Korcula, abode and now are the only population of both the city and the island.

Korcula

The Statute of Korcula, one of the oldest legal documents in this part of Europe, was adopted in the year 1214. In the same century, Marco Polo, the legendary traveler and globetrotter, explorer of the Far East, skilled merchant and diplomat at the court of Kublai-Khan was born in Korcula, in the year 1254. His birth house still stands in Korcula. Beside the remainders of the Romanic style, the dominant in the architecture of Korcula are the Gothic and Renaissance styles applied in the final phase of construction of the city walls and towers. The sites worth seeing in Korcula are the City Museum, Treasury of the Abbots, collection of icons, picture galleries and old church buildings where the priceless works of art made by famous masters, from Leonardo da Vinci to Jacoppo Tintoretto, are kept safe.                                                                                                                           The impression with Korcula could not be complete if we did not mention the old play of knights called Moreska, the spectacular combat dance with swords. The battle of two kings and their armies for love of the beautiful lady (local: bula), set up in impressive costumes was performed worldwide, at festivals and guest performances, by the only know-how-to performers from Korcula.
